If the body's temperature drops below 28°C, too much heat is lost - you freeze. While the fat under the skin (subcutaneous) helps to minimize heat conduction, the muscles start to twitch. This twitching doubles or even triples heat production. Due to the fact that veins and arteries are very close to one another, the cold, venous blood that flows back from the arms and legs is warmed up by the warmer, arterial blood.
