Largest wool festival in Scandinavia
The Uldfestival Saltum, now the largest Scandinavian wool festival, has been taking place for over 10 years. Every year on the second weekend in May. This time on the 11th and 12th of May 2019.
Basically, the overarching theme is knitting wool. Mainly cotton and sheep's wool are offered in a wide variety of qualities and numerous color nuances. But it also revolves around knitting fashion and knitting accessories. Workshops and specialist lectures are offered for those who are active and interested in theory.
Every year the Uldfestival has a motto. In 2018 it was: “Knitting fashion, knitting traditions and patterns from the Baltic States”. In 2019 it was “Knitting traditions and patterns (Lace and Fair Isle) from the Shetland Islands”.
We had a stand there this year and made contact with the Scandinavians and presented our wool. It was a very interesting weekend for us. We learned a lot. Firstly, that the Scandinavians, who were of course mostly Danish visitors, have a pleasant, interested manner. Secondly, that alpaca wool is largely unknown. Regional preferences are often very different. The Danes seem to have fewer problems with touching scratchy wool than our German knitters, for example. We naturally let them feel our baby alpaca wool, which they found quite pleasant. We suspected it and were still happy.
