For centuries, herders high in the Andes have bred alpacas in a variety of shades and combinations. However, due to growing interest in white fiber, the number of colored alpacas has declined sharply, which has also affected the population of black alpacas.
Today, black alpacas are very rare and make up far less than 1% of the total population.
To counteract this decline, our alpaca breeders in Peru have launched the Black Alpaca Program. Naturally black alpacas must be preserved and protected. This is what we are committed to.
They also donated many of these alpacas to highland communities in the Andes so that they could incorporate them into their own herds and breed them, thus ensuring that their species will continue to exist in the future.
During our last visit to the Alpaca Farm in Peru, we were so impressed by this wonderful program that we really wanted to participate in it. Therefore, we received 100 kg of this amazing fiber, which we have included in our ALPAWOOL® Premium line with 3 strengths (Bulky, DK and Fingering).
This yarn allows you to knit a masterpiece made from 100% black alpaca natural fibers, completely without the use of dyes, so the original color is preserved. This approach not only contributes to the authenticity of our knitwear, but also protects the environment, as no additional chemical processes are required.
We invite you to join us in fighting for the preservation of black alpacas.
