Storing your knitwear properly is more important than you might think... especially if you want your knitwear to last!
After years of wear, even the best sweaters will show signs of wear. However, with a little care and proper storage, you can help your knitwear last longer and continue to look fresh.
STORAGE OF KNITWEAR
The best way to store your sweaters is to fold them and place them on a shelf in a closet or dresser. This way they won't get wrinkled or out of shape. You can also hang your sweaters, but we recommend using a padded hanger so the shape isn't compromised.
When you are not wearing your knitwear, you should store it in a cool, dry place and keep it away from heat (e.g. radiators) as this can break down the fibres over time.
If you want to fold like our knitting experts, proceed as follows:
- Lay your sweater flat.
- Fold one sleeve diagonally inward so that the cuff is opposite the shoulder and repeat with the other sleeve.
- Make sure it is smooth and remove any wrinkles with your hand.
- Hold the hem of your knit and pull it towards your neck. If you are folding a thick and chunky knit, roll it up.
THE RULES FOR STORING KNITWEAR
To keep your knitwear looking like new, we recommend that you follow a few rules when it comes to certain types of knitwear:
Wool sweaters: Wool is a natural fiber and can be damaged by heat, so avoid storing it in a hot attic or in a closet exposed to the sun. A cool, dark place, such as a dresser or under the bed, is fine.
Alpaca or cashmere (and other delicates): These knitwear items should be stored in an airtight garment bag or container to protect them from moths and dust.
Hand-knitted sweaters: These often have delicate details that can be easily damaged, so you should store them with care. Using acid-free tissue paper to wrap each garment can help protect them while they are stored.
PILLING REMOVAL
Pilling is unfortunately a natural process that occurs in even the highest quality knitwear. It is a result of wear and tear. To keep your favorite knitwear looking like new, it is best to remove the pills. Pilling on thicker yarn can be removed by hand, although a pilling comb is best to avoid damage.
WHAT TO DO WHEN IT'S TIME TO TAKE OUT YOUR WOOL TREASURES?When it's time to bring out your favorite pieces, you should first give them a quick visual inspection to make sure they still look the same as before. If you've stored them with mothballs or bags, they might smell a little, but that's okay! The great thing about knitwear is that smells don't linger for long. Put them somewhere where air can circulate well and they can breathe.
Following these simple tips will extend the life of your knitwear. With good care, your sweaters will continue to look fresh, so you can concentrate on what you want to wear with them!
