A cozy wool sweater, a self-knitted scarf, or a warm cardigan—some garments you’d love to wear every day. But eventually, the question arises: How often should you actually wash knitwear?
The answer might surprise you: Much less often than you think! Especially high-quality natural fibers like alpaca wool do not need to be washed after every wear. On the contrary: Washing too frequently can unnecessarily strain the fibers.
We’ll tell you when your knitwear really needs a wash, why fresh air is sometimes the better solution, and what simple care tips will keep your favorite pieces beautiful for a long time.
How often should you really wash knitwear?
While t-shirts and underwear need to be washed regularly, knitwear is different. Especially sweaters, cardigans, and scarves often do not come into direct contact with the skin and therefore stay clean longer.
How often washing is necessary depends on several factors: the material, how long it is worn, skin contact, and, of course, whether the garment is dirty.
You can use the following as a guide:
- Sweaters and cardigans: Wash after several wears, provided no stains or unpleasant odors develop.
- Scarves and shawls: Often, occasional washing and regular airing out are sufficient.
- Hats: Clean depending on use and contact with hair, skincare products, or sweat.
- Gloves: Wash if visibly dirty or after intensive use.
- Knitted socks: Normally wash after every wear for hygiene reasons.
So there is no fixed rule for all knitwear. It is much more important to pay attention to the actual condition of your clothing.

Why does alpaca wool need to be washed so rarely?
Alpaca wool is not only known for its exceptional softness and pleasant warmth. The natural fiber also has properties that make it particularly interesting for long-lasting knitwear.
1. Alpaca fibers absorb relatively little moisture
Alpaca fibers have a different fiber structure than, for example, cotton. They absorb relatively little moisture and can stay pleasantly dry during normal use.
However, this does not mean that alpaca wool never absorbs odors or needs to be cleaned. For light use, thorough airing out is often sufficient.
2. Fresh air instead of a washing machine
One major advantage of high-quality alpaca knitwear: Often, it is enough to let it rest for a few hours in a well-ventilated place after wearing it.
This allows light odors to dissipate without exposing the garment to an additional wash.
3. Washing less protects the fibers
Every wash means movement, moisture, and mechanical stress for the fibers.
Especially delicate knitwear can become pilled, lose its shape, or lose its softness if handled incorrectly.
Therefore, by washing your alpaca wool only when necessary, you help preserve its original properties for as long as possible.
Airing out instead of washing: How to do it properly
If you have only worn your favorite sweater for a few hours and it still smells fresh, it does not necessarily need to be washed.
Try this simple care routine instead:
-
Lay flat after wearing: Drape your sweater loosely over a drying rack so that air can circulate well.
-
Use fresh air: A shady, sheltered spot on the balcony or by an open window is particularly suitable.
-
Avoid direct sunlight: Intense sunlight can damage delicate fibers and colors.
-
Let it dry completely: Before putting the garment back in the closet, it should be dry.
When should you definitely wash knitwear?
Even though washing less is often a good idea, there are situations in which cleaning becomes necessary.
If your knitwear has visible stains, smells distinctly of sweat, or has been worn intensively for an extended period, you should clean it according to the care instructions.
Regular hygiene is especially important for clothing that comes into direct contact with the skin.
Small, fresh stains can sometimes be treated carefully and locally. However, you should not rub hard, as this can damage the delicate surface of the knit wool.
Washing alpaca wool properly: What to look out for
If your favorite piece really needs a wash, gentle handling is crucial.
Hand washing for delicate knitwear
Many classic alpaca wool yarns should be washed by hand with particular care.
Use cool to lukewarm water and a suitable wool detergent. Move the garment gently in the water and avoid vigorous rubbing or wringing.
After washing, you can carefully blot away excess water with a towel.
Can alpaca wool go in the washing machine?
That depends on the respective yarn quality and its treatment.
While many classic alpaca yarns require particularly gentle hand washing, there are specially treated qualities that are suitable for machine washing.
One example is our alpacare®. This yarn quality can be washed at 30 °C according to the care instructions.
It is therefore always important to check the care label. Not all alpaca wool is automatically allowed in the washing machine.
Why the right detergent is important.
Conventional all-purpose detergents may contain ingredients that are unsuitable for delicate natural fibers.
A special wool detergent is therefore the better choice. It cleans gently and helps preserve the properties of the fibers.
The most common mistake: Drying knitwear incorrectly
Delicate knitwear can be damaged not only during washing but also during drying.
A wet sweater is significantly heavier than a dry one. If it is hung up to dry, the weight can pull the stitches downward and deform the garment.
Therefore: Knitwear is best dried flat.
Spread your sweater out on a dry towel, gently pull it into its original shape, and let it dry in a well-ventilated place.
Avoid direct heat from radiators and strong sunlight.
Washing less is also more sustainable
By caring for your knitwear more consciously, you are not only doing something good for your clothing.
Every avoided machine wash can save water and energy. At the same time, the fibers are less strained, which can extend the useful life of high-quality garments.
Especially with self-knitted sweaters, scarves, or shawls, a lot of time, patience, and love is often invested in every single stitch.
It is all the more wonderful when these special pieces can be worn for many years.
Your knitwear deserves gentle care
How often should you wash knitwear? The best answer is: As often as necessary, but as rarely as possible.
Especially with alpaca wool, regular airing out can be a sensible alternative to frequent washing. Pay attention to stains, odors, and the individual care instructions for your knitwear.
With a little attention, the right detergent, and gentle drying, your hand-knitted favorite pieces will stay soft, beautifully shaped, and cozy for a long time.
Because a lovingly knitted sweater is much more than just a garment—it is a piece of craftsmanship that deserves to bring joy for a long time.
